Terminal habits I keep coming back to
None of these are original, and none of them are clever. They're just the small handful of shell habits that have survived every dotfiles rewrite I've ever done, which is probably the best endorsement they could get.
A short history search over a long one. I used to keep an enormous .bash_history and grep through it. These days I just alias the last few genuinely useful commands into named shortcuts instead of relying on memory or reverse search.
tmux, but only three keybindings. I know maybe a tenth of what tmux can do, and I've made peace with that. Split, switch, detach — that covers 95% of what I actually need on a given day.
Naming things by what they do. Scripts named deploy.sh or backup.sh instead of anything clever. Six months later, clever names are just riddles I've set for myself.
alias ll='ls -lah' alias gs='git status' alias ..='cd ..'
That's genuinely most of it. The unglamorous stuff is the stuff that lasts.
